Hey Caroline,

I’m so sorry to hear you’re in pain, both physically and psychologically (from the baby ban!)

Something similar though physically less painful happened to me (& Steve), and threatens to re-happen as the kids get bigger and the carrying positions/carseat maneuvers keep getting more contortionistic.

One (unsolicited) suggestion for when you’ve recovered is developing a regular “trunk strengthening” workout… that is, if your back permits. Goal: prevent recurrence. Really, take care. Baby care is hard! Love, a

i’m so sorry. for me it was the pregnancy that was the worst, but i’ve had my share of post-partum issues as well (no one tells you how hard breastfeeding is beforehand!). my only advice is that vitamin D really has been helping in our house. i’m not sure when you can start the little one (i’d consult with a naturopath or pediatrician) but Molly’s immune system has been pretty kick-ass since we started her on Vit D drops every day. it’s been a noticeable improvement. good luck to you, she’ll be walking soon and there will be much less carrying and stress to your back. call us, anytime if you need anything! -jen, zero and molly

hey lady, hang in there. you can buy my Healthy Back Book in May. How helpful am I? I would recoemmend the same as your friend suggests: core strength after you heal. I think yoga is the bomb. and the right physical therapist or doc also good. wish I could carry Delphine for you. She is my kind of baby! (:

Every time I have a round of terrible back pain, I try a different physical therapy. Six years ago, when the problems first started, I became a jogger. Two years ago, when they recurred, I switched to swimming. Having a baby, of course, has meant that my physical activity has shifted to baby-lifting, laundry-hauling, and trying to take a daily walk with the baby in the stroller. Not so great overall for me. Next up? A friend recommended something a few months ago called Barre 3, which is basically core training that combines yoga, pilates, and ballet (!). I had written it off as a yuppie indulgence until I looked it up yesterday and realized that they provided cheap child care during sessions. Sold!

I hope Barre 3 works for you, Caroline. In general, my back is much better with my only-once-a-week-these-days Pilates workouts. I won’t give them up!

Feel better soon.

Jen — thanks for the tips. I don’t have much faith in any school of medical thought any more, since apart from replacing good exercise (swimming) with bad (lugging baby), I’ve been pretty much a model patient for years — good diet, lots of vitamins (including tons of vitamin D for me and the baby) and supplements, acupuncture, using a yoga ball instead of a chair, yada yada. And ya know what? None of it has prevented jack. Oh, well.
